You don’t have to know where psychotherapy is going to go when you start. Current trends suggests you should have clear outcomes in mind from the beginning, that may fit some cases, perhaps some phobias and behaviours but it won’t fit all.
It is sometimes enough to know that there is something on your mind that requires attention. Perhaps to do with how uncomfortable you feel in relationships, perhaps to do with other kinds of worries. Perhaps to do with feeling you want to make more of your potential. All you need to know is that there is a question that needs attention.
At the start all that may count is your interest, and if that can be protected who knows how or where that interest might take you. At the beginning all you may know is that you are interested to speak and open up your thoughts feelings and questions confidentially. That may be all the beginning you need.
